What is hot & cold therapy?
Your physio uses moist heat or cold packs to ease pain and stiffness, and teaches you when to use each at home as part of your plan.
Heat increases blood flow and tissue extensibility; cold slows nerve conduction and reduces local pain. Both are simple, low-risk ways to manage symptoms while exercise and movement drive recovery.
Also called: Thermotherapy, Cryotherapy, Hot packs, Ice packs
What it can help with
When hot & cold therapy is not suitable
Your physio screens for these at the first visit and refers you to a doctor if needed.
- Reduced sensation or diabetes with nerve damage — Risk of burns or cold injury.
- Poor circulation or Raynaud’s — Cold is avoided.
- Open wounds or skin infection — Not applied.
- Heat over a fresh injury or active inflammation — Cold is used instead.
Who hot & cold therapy can help
Your physio decides after the assessment. It is one part of a plan, never the whole plan.
