What it is

What is cupping therapy?

Silicone or glass cups create gentle suction over tight muscles. Used alongside exercise, it can ease muscle tension and help you move more comfortably.

Your physiotherapist places cups on the skin and creates suction, either static or gliding over oiled skin. The lift on skin and fascia changes how tissues and nerves sense tension, which can temporarily reduce pain and stiffness. The evidence is strongest for short-term relief of neck and back pain; it works best as part of an active rehab plan.

Also called: Myofascial cupping, Dry cupping

FAQs

Questions people ask

Does cupping hurt?

It feels like a firm pulling or deep massage. Your physio adjusts the suction to your comfort.

Will I get marks?

Usually yes. The round marks fade within about a week. Tell us if you have an event coming up and we can avoid visible areas.

Is this the same as hijama (wet cupping)?

No. We only do dry cupping — no cuts or bleeding.

How many sessions do I need?

Most people try 3 sessions and continue if it helps, always with a home exercise plan.
