What is therapeutic ultrasound?
A small probe delivers high-frequency sound waves into tendons, ligaments and muscles. It is used selectively alongside exercise for some soft-tissue problems.
Sound waves above hearing range are passed through gel into the tissue. In continuous mode they produce gentle heat; in pulsed mode they create mechanical effects at the cellular level. Evidence for ultrasound is mixed, so we use it selectively and never as the only treatment.

- Over the eyes, heart, pregnant abdomen or growth plates in children — Never applied here.
- Active cancer or DVT — Not used over the area.
- Reduced sensation or poor circulation — Heat mode is avoided.
- Metal implants or cemented joint replacements — Used with caution or not at all.
