What it is

What is electrical muscle stimulation (ems)?

EMS makes a muscle contract through pads on the skin. It is used to re-activate muscles weakened by surgery, injury or nerve problems, always together with active exercise.

Pads over the muscle deliver pulses strong enough to cause a visible contraction. You are asked to contract with the current, which helps the brain and muscle reconnect. EMS supplements — never replaces — voluntary strengthening.

Also called: EMS, NMES, Muscle stimulation

Questions people ask

Is this the same as gym EMS suits?

No. Clinical EMS targets a specific weak muscle as part of rehab.

Will it build muscle on its own?

Not meaningfully. It helps you activate the muscle so exercise works better.

Does it hurt?

It is intense but should not be painful; the level is adjusted to you.
