What it is

What is tens?

Small pads on the skin deliver a tingling current that can reduce pain while it is on and for a while after — useful to make exercise and daily activity more comfortable.

TENS sends low-voltage pulses through electrodes on the skin. The tingling sensation competes with pain signals at the spinal cord (the “gate control” effect) and may trigger the body’s own pain-relieving chemicals. Relief is usually short-lived, so TENS is used to support an active plan rather than on its own.

Also called: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation

FAQs

Questions people ask

Does TENS cure the problem?

No. It eases pain temporarily; exercise and loading address the cause.

Is it safe?

Yes for most people, when used by a physio who has screened you for the contraindications listed.

How is TENS different from IFT?

TENS uses surface pulses; IFT crosses two medium-frequency currents to reach deeper. Your physio chooses based on the area and your comfort.
