What is exercise therapy?
Guided strength, mobility, balance and control exercises, progressed week by week. The most strongly recommended treatment for most muscle, joint and nerve problems.
After assessing your movement, strength and goals, your physio designs exercises at the right level and increases the challenge gradually. Sessions are supervised so technique is correct, and you get a short home programme to do between visits. Clinical guidelines recommend exercise as first-line treatment for back pain, knee osteoarthritis and many other conditions.
Also called: Therapeutic exercise, Rehab exercise
What it can help with
When exercise therapy is not suitable
Your physio screens for these at the first visit and refers you to a doctor if needed.
- Chest pain, dizziness or breathlessness at rest — Needs a doctor’s review first.
- Uncontrolled blood pressure or blood sugar — Exercise is adapted or delayed.
- Acute injury with severe swelling — We start with gentle movement only.
Who exercise therapy can help
Your physio decides after the assessment. It is one part of a plan, never the whole plan.
