What is dry needling?
A trained physiotherapist inserts very thin, single-use needles into tight muscle bands to reduce pain and muscle tension, then follows up with movement and exercise.
A thin, solid filament needle (no medicine is injected) is inserted into a trigger point. A brief twitch of the muscle is common and is followed by relaxation. It is thought to work by changing local muscle chemistry and how the nervous system processes pain. It is a Western, anatomy-based technique — different from traditional acupuncture.
Also called: Trigger point dry needling, Intramuscular stimulation
What it can help with
When dry needling is not suitable
Your physio screens for these at the first visit and refers you to a doctor if needed.
- Fear of needles — We will suggest an alternative such as cupping or manual therapy.
- Blood thinners or bleeding disorders — Needs medical clearance first.
- Pregnancy (first trimester) — Avoided; later stages only on selected areas.
- Local infection, lymphoedema or an implant nearby — Not needled over these areas.
Who dry needling can help
Your physio decides after the assessment. It is one part of a plan, never the whole plan.

Questions people ask
Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
No. It uses similar needles but is based on muscle anatomy and trigger points, not meridians.
Does it hurt?
Insertion is barely felt; the muscle twitch can feel like a cramp for a moment.
Who performs it?
Only physiotherapists trained and certified in dry needling.
Can I exercise after?
Light activity is fine. Avoid heavy training of the needled muscle for a day.
