What it is

What is interferential therapy (ift)?

IFT uses two medium-frequency currents that meet in the tissue, giving a comfortable stimulation that can help with pain and muscle spasm in larger areas like the back and knee.

Four pads create two currents that “interfere” where they cross, producing a low-frequency effect deep in the tissue. Like TENS, it works mainly on pain signalling. Research shows modest, short-term benefit, which is why we combine it with exercise.

Also called: IFT, Interferential current, IFC

FAQs

Questions people ask

Will I feel a shock?

No. The sensation is a comfortable buzz that your physio adjusts.

How soon will it help?

Many people notice relief during the session; the effect is temporary, so exercises matter.

Can I have IFT with a metal implant?

Tell your physio — it is usually avoided directly over metal implants.
