Why physios still use machines
Pain can block the very exercises that help recovery. TENS and IFT are ways to turn the volume down for a window — so manual therapy and exercise therapy can do their job.
They do not replace assessment, education or progressive loading.
A sensible home-visit pattern
- Find the driver of your pain (desk load, stairs, weakness, flare pattern)
- Use electrotherapy briefly if it helps you tolerate movement
- Spend the bulk of the session on mobility, control and strength you can repeat alone
- Review what changed before booking more machine time
Safety first
Tell your physio about pacemakers or other implants, pregnancy, epilepsy, numbness, open skin, active cancer treatment or suspected clots. Those details change the plan more than any gadget setting.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between TENS and IFT?
Both use electrical currents for pain relief. TENS is often more portable; IFT uses intersecting medium-frequency currents and is common in clinic-style kits. Your physio chooses based on the problem and equipment on the visit.
Can electrotherapy be done at home?
Yes when the physio brings appropriate devices and screening allows it.
Is electrotherapy safe?
When screened and applied correctly, yes for many people. We avoid unsafe placements and populations (for example certain implants).
Will TENS fix my disc?
No. Machines do not remodel discs. They may calm symptoms while you build a movement and load plan.
