What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy delivers strong acoustic pulses into long-standing tendon problems such as plantar heel pain and tennis elbow, where it can reduce pain when combined with exercise.
A hand-held applicator sends acoustic pressure waves into the painful tendon. This is thought to reduce pain sensitivity and stimulate tissue remodelling. Results build over 6–12 weeks and are best with a tendon-loading programme.
Also called: ESWT, Extracorporeal shockwave therapy
